Éléonore Gold Mine – James Bay, QC

Customer : Goldcorp

Éleonore is a major gold deposit located in the greenstone/ meta-sedimentary belt of the south-east area of the Opinaca reservoir, in the James Bay territory of northern Quebec.

The Éleonore project comprised underground mining operations, support infrastructure, the access road, a landing strip and a work camp for up to 600 people. Above ground, all infrastructure for mineral treatment were also required.

Goldcorp hired Englobe as a consultant in 2009, to provide geology and geotechnical services and material control. A geotechnical survey was completed to prepare construction of Troilus camp and the dug material pile. Recommendations for the geotechnical design were provided, notably concerning load-bearing capacity. Englobe’s involvement in materials control focused mainly on the quality of aggregates used to build all the mine infrastructure, including the access road and an earth-fill dam. Englobe’s teams also provided mixing formulas for concrete and monitored and controlled its installation during the construction of the mine’s underground sections. Lastly, our teams provided support to the designer regarding the load-bearing capacity of the basement rock and monitored the placement of the fills during the construction of above-ground structures.

The Englobe Advantage

Englobe satisfied all the requirements and needs of the project manager for the geotechnical survey and materials control throughout the construction of the mine. Englobe also met the challenge of setting up a large staff of professionals and technicians for work that took place 7 days a week, often around the clock.
